This slide of the boy holding papayas was taken sometime during 1956. So he could be over 50 years old now. He was one of a gang that came to my house most afternoons to help me learn their language - Kisongye. Those are papaya; a favourite tropical fruit. Cut them in half length ways, scoop out the seeds and fill the halves with banana and sugar. Papaya become Yum-yum. This fruit is sometimes called Pawpaw, however, pawpaw is an entirely different fruit common to South American countries.
Papaya is very popular for breakfast. Its leaves can be used to tenderise meat.
