I've been reading Peter's first letter to 'the pilgrims ..' chapter 3 v 8 and following. It gets to a bit about Christ's sufferings and how, by the Spirit, he went and preached to the spirits in prison . etc. I have a job getting my head around that. There are several angles of teaching over what it exactly means. But its the very practical down to earth advice in verse 8 and 9 I really need to get my head around! This effects life in the now.
The paragraph heading (put in by the publishers) says "Called to Blessing" I like that. The other day someone said to me "God bless you" they were really surprised when I grasped their hand and said "Thank you so much - and may he bless you too" What they used as a kind of 'Christian thing to say', was to me the desire of their heart for me. That I should be blessed. A young man said to his elderly dad one day - "Dad - I want to you to bless me".The dad said - "Son - I don't know how to do that - how do I do that" The son said "Well dad - just put your hand on my head and and say some good things about me, and say what you feel you'd like to be and how you'd like me to turn out!" Tears came to dad's eyes as he began hesitatingly to 'bless' his son. But the words became more clear and, faster flowing, as he spoke out his deepest wishes for his son. It was a precious time and the father and son relationship took on a new meaning. Paul says that WE -"are blessed with every spiritual blessing in Christ Jesus ..." God, the Father, is 'blessing' us because we are His family 'in Christ' He is saying good things about us - in fact maybe even boasting about us before the angels!
Back to v 8/9. Not just saying the words, but, living the life! Having one mind - connected in our faith and reaching our together for His best for each other. Having compassion. Loving each other as brothers and sisters. As true relatives. Being humble towards each other, not getting back at each other, but being tender-hearted. In fact - blessing each other by our communal behavior. It says .... blessing, knowing that you were called to do this!. So lets think and say good things about each other. Remember, "love covers a load of faults"! (1 Peter 4v) Bless someone today.
